Zephyrus Opinion

In Edina High School, more and more talk about peoples' opinions are being heard about the school newspaper; Zephyrus. Sometimes the articles in the paper can hardly even be called news. While Edina High School offers a class especially for journalism, it would make sense for the writers of the paper to enhance their learning by taking the class. However, only a few students part of the paper are even taking the class.
So far in journalism class, we've learned quite a bit of what should and shouldn't be in a story. One thing that should especially be in a paper is an area for cited sources. Whenever you use something that isn't yours, such as a picture, quote etc, you must cite that source to give the person credit.
In Zephrus, a work cited was not included in any area of the paper. Most people would probably agree that a school newspaper should have the right criteria to show other students how a paper should be written. Some students might read the newspaper and not see a work cited and later on not realize that they are necessary, therefore not properly writing the story.
The story about illegal downloading says a survey was done on a number of students and if they have downloaded illegal music at any point of their lives. Mistake, a survey done by students at a school is not a reliable source by any means. Although some students might be telling the truth, a number of the students could simply have been lying just to "fit in".
It's the same case when a state test is given to students to take and the scores wont be directly impacting them. When this happens, the word around school is most likely that you dont have to try and just answer however you feel.
In my case, I hardly ever read the Zephyrus because of the past issues not appealing to me whatsoever. A lot of the stories in this issue and the past seem to be about things that the author finds interesting and wants others to know about. A newspaper should be what it is, "News".
In this issue, I felt like people are getting more and more uninterested and more frustrated with what is being published. On Friday, in every class after the paper was distributed, I could constantly hear people complaining about the issue and those in the past.
If the Zephyrus wants more readers, the publishers and authors should ask themselves what they think is news, maybe more interesting topics will appear, I guess we'll see.

2 ideas

1) Slug: Open for Business
2) Section of newspaper story would appear: Features
3) What are the most dominant news elements in the story?
Proximity: because the Target is going to be in Edina.
Timeliness: The store just opened so its not too far in the past yet to write about, and other people probably arent aware of the fact its opened already.
Localization: Its a local event. The story could be published in the Star Tribune to inform locals.
4) In a few sentences, describe what the story will be about:
The story will be about the construction process of making it/length of time it took to complete...etc. Also a brief overview of what is carried in SuperTargets compared to normal Targets.
5) Specifically, who will you interview or contact? Why those people?
The Mayor because he will most likely have the backround information and numbers of others I could contact for further information. The construction company because I can get all the info on the process and length of time it took to complete. The manager of the new Target to find out what products are sold in the Super Target vs. Target.
6) What information do you need to gather before you begin interviews?
Ill gather info on the starting date and ending date to confirm that they are correct. Ill make sure I'm going to the right people to talk to for the right facts, (make sure they are reliable sources).
7) What questions do you definitely need answered in your interviews? Why?
I need to get confirmed the dates the construction was started and completed, what products are sold in Super Targets, any troubles during construction, info on how the first day of opening went.
8) What photo opportunities are available to go alongside this story (give names, places, times, etc.)?
Some good photos would include the old Target that used to be in its place, the tearing down on the old building, the construction/make of the building, the new building, inside the store.
9) Who should a photographer contact to set up photographs?
The photographer should contact the store manager to set up a good time to come in.
10) What concerns or problems do you foresee in getting this story together?
I think it might be difficult to get answered problems that occured during the construction due to safety concerns.

1) Slug: Rock Gods Reunite

2) Section of newspaper story would appear (no Op-Ed): News

3) What are the most dominant news elements in the story? Explain in-depth:

Timeliness. The show is coming up in about a month, gives people time to prepare for the concert. (November 26, 2007). Led Zeppelin is a widely known band to the population and most likely, many of them will want to know the information on the upcoming concert so they dont miss the historic event.

Consequence. These days, many older bands from the 70's and 80's are reuniting while discovering they have many new/younger fans, so they realize they can still be successfull. Led Zeppelin will most likely spawn a spark in the music industry and cause a lot more older bands to reunite and possibly influence people throughout the world to create new bands.

Prominince. Led Zeppelin is a widely known band to most people around the world. Even if you dont listen to them, most likely you've heard of them. Of course they are famous and people will love to read about their reunion and will probably be more interested in a story about a band they like over something they are already familiar with.

4) In a few sentences, describe what the story will be about:
The story will be about their upcoming reunion show that is to take place November 26, 2008 in London at the O2 arena. The story will include quick facts about the last time they played together, the set list...etc.

5) Specifically, who will you interview or contact? Why those people?

I will talk to big fans of the band to see if they will be attending the show or if they will see it. Also I'll talk to people who might just know who they are and see how they react to the fact that they will play a show for the first time in years. Talking to both sides will show how recognized they are to the public.

I'll try to contact Atlantic Records and Swan Song Records to get info on if the band will be putting out any new material or if they band has spent any time hinting that new songs will be put out for the future.

I'll contact Peter Grant who is the band manager and ask him how the band as a whole is getting along and how they sound these days compared to the older days.

6) What information do you need to gather before you begin interviews?
I'll need to gather the dates/time/place of where the show is to be taken place and make sure it is all correct. i'll need to gather all the numbers and contacts of everyone I'll be talking to and make sure they are all reliable sources.

7) What questions do you definitely need answered in your interviews? Why?
Ill need answered how the band is doing, sounding, performing. Also figure out how the band is getting along with each other. I'll need answered the rumours of Led Zeppelin putting out an album on ITunes and also a greatest hits album.
8) What photo opportunities are available to go alongside this story (give names, places, times, etc.)?
Pictures of the band from their very early days up to recent photographs. Pictures of John Bonham's grave. Picture of the O2 venue that the will perform at. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, John Paul Jones personal pictures.
9) Who should a photographer contact to set up photographs?
The photographer should contact old photo companies that took band pics and has access to archives of the pictures.
10) What concerns or problems do you foresee in getting this story together?
I would expect some trouble contacting the record companies and band manager probably because they have had to deal with the press enough in the past few months about this same story so I'm sure they would probably try to avoid questions about the band.

Super Dooper Super Target

Ok, so who thinks this new Super Target is going to be totally awesome, I know i do. I'm not sure if all those loop-d-loops are for the Target or the new Hotel thats being built, but that definately is not a necessity. Some people I know feel a little different towards the new Target being built in a way that they think money should be spent on different/more worthwile things. Personally, I've never been in a Super Target, but I think this is gonna live up to many people's expectations. From what I've heard, the store will have a wide variety of products that wouldn't be found in a normal Target, I guess that could kind of be a given. For all the unemployed out there, this might be a future occupation of many also. So if you are excited about the new Target, go check it out when it opens
